The premier cinematic event of the Pacific, the 44th Annual Hawai‘i International Film Festival (HIFF) Fall Festival will feature an exciting slate of screenings to showcase feature and short film premieres from around the world with a special focus on Asia, the Pacific, and made-in-Hawaiʻi productions.

HIFF is a desired destination for local and visiting industry professionals, emerging artists, and film enthusiasts. Enjoy screenings of all the best festival films at Kahilu along with filmmaker Q&As for select programs.

THE SHAPE OF THINGS: THE DICK BREWER STORY

The story of the colorful and controversial, legendary surfboard designer and builder, Dick Brewer. Dubbed surfing's 'da Vinci of design," the film embraces, amazes and, with just enough tension, dives into the mysterious and rollercoaster life of Brewer at the forefront of the 60’s and 70’s burgeoning surf culture. Brewer’s brilliant mind and engineering innovations inspired a revolution in surfboard design impacting his early generation through the present day. Through interviews, narratives, and archival footage, his peers pay tribute to a man whose story was immersed in conflict and drama that chronicles surfing's unrelenting evolution and his dedication to pushing the limits of what is possible, not only in surfing, but in life itself.

Director Laurel Tamayo’s family lost their multigenerational home in the 2023 Lahaina wildfire, the deadliest wildfire in modern US history. Through personal recounts, this documentary paints an intimate portrait of survival, climate change and colonization, and community resilience.
