On Display Until January 7, 2024 –
In Kahilu’s Hāmākua Gallery, Malialani Dullanty’s exhibition, Huliau, will feature watercolor paintings with corresponding poetry to address some of the nuanced complexities of being Native Hawaiian in Hawaiʻi nei today. The rich colors and iconography invite viewers to consider the pilina (interconnectedness) Kānaka Maoli have with their environment, language, stories, history, and each other. Dullanty creates from a place of experience and thoughtful listening, drawing upon moʻolelo and kaʻao to explore science, genealogy, and life lessons.
In Kahilu’s Simperman Gallery, Janice Nakashima’s mixed-media artworks will be featured in her exhibition, Seeking Solace. As a third generation Japanese American, Asian influences can be found, subtly and at times more consciously in her large mixed-media compositions. Drawing from musical forms, Nakashima creates rhythms and patterns with ink on layers of translucent paper. The resulting visual compositions are reminiscent of abstracted stained glass windows, glowing with color and texture.
The artists will be in attendance on Thursday, November 9 to greet visitors and discuss their work.
The galleries are free and open to the public on Wednesdays from 10am - 2pm and Thursdays 4pm - 8pm.
