Kamuela (HI)—Kahilu is delighted to present award-winning pianist MAHANI TEAVE on Sunday, November 5 at 3pm HST.
On the heels of her chart-topping debut album, Easter Island’s only professional classical musician, the award-winning pioneering pianist and environmentalist Mahani Teave, embarks on her debut U.S. concert tour. Her eagerly-anticipated appearances include works by Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, and premieres by Chilean composers José Miguel Tobar and Alejandro Arévalo. Experience the recital debut of what BBC Music Magazine calls Mahani’s “…natural pianism….genuine virtuosity…. sincere, pure and magnificent artistry.”
Having performed in concert halls globally, for Chile’s past five presidents, and embassies in over 8 countries, Mahani set aside her burgeoning career at age 30 to found her island’s first music school, Toki Rapa Nui, a self-sustaining ecological wonder which also teaches children about renewable natural resources and their quickly-fading cultural heritage.
Twice distinguished as one of 100 Women Leaders of Chile, Mahani’s story was captured in the Emmy- nominated documentary Song of Rapa Nui and children’s book, The Girl Who Heard the Music. Recent features include The New York Times, NPR, CBS Sunday Morning, PBS NewsHour, Amanpour & Co, Gramophone, and Good Morning America.
